Punggol East By Election 2013 voting result

Ms Lee Li Lian of the Workers' Party (WP) has won the Punggol East by-election in a hard fought 9-days campaign. Dr Koh of the People's Action Party (PAP) has lost by a margin of slightly more than 10%. This shows the ruling party may need to put in more work on both both national and local issues to convince Singaporeans into voting for them in the next General Election. The other 2 candidates, Kenneth Jeyaretnam of the Reform Party (RP) and Desmond Lim (Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), failed to secure the minimum 12.5%, hence losing their $14,500 election deposits.

Are we moving slowly towards a 2-party system? Perhaps but not that soon. To-date, the Workers' Party is now sitting on 8 parliamentary seats out of the total 88 seats. The remaining 80 seats are by the PAP's.

The breakdown voting result is as such:

Lee Li Lian (WP) 16,038 votes (54.52%)
Koh Poh Koon (PAP) 12,856 votes (43.71%)
Kenneth Jeyaretnam (RP) 353 votes (1.20%)
Desmond Lim (SDA) 168 votes (0.57%)

Total valid votes 29,415
Total rejected votes 417
Total votes 29,832

An irrelevant comment - Why is the total rejected votes more than the votes for RP and SDA? Oops.

The by election result was announced by the Returning Officer, Yam Ah Mee, at around 11pm last night. Watch Yam Ah Mee possibly last appearance as a Returning Officer below.

NOTE: Above result does not include the overseas votes.

QET next week

My friend admitting to NTU this month had had their QET few days back and from them, their QET's format was straightforward and questions to me was simple. 2 close passages with some blanks for students to fill in and a 300 words essay to be written from many topics to choose from. Topics available to choose from are like "Why do you choose NTU?", "Describe one major recent event just happened in your country", "What do you want to do in the future?", etc. Very simple to write essay with 300 words limit. But then for NUS, it is a very different story. 1 close passage with many grammatical phrases underlined for you to edit and a 500 words essay to write. Before writing the essay, there will have 3 pre-reading topics for students to ponder and then a lengthy topic related article to read from. There is only ONE essay TOPIC to write on and it can be like "how your country's goverment can help reserve the originality of tourist spot…
