Punggol East By Election 2013 voting result

Ms Lee Li Lian of the Workers' Party (WP) has won the Punggol East by-election in a hard fought 9-days campaign. Dr Koh of the People's Action Party (PAP) has lost by a margin of slightly more than 10%. This shows the ruling party may need to put in more work on both both national and local issues to convince Singaporeans into voting for them in the next General Election. The other 2 candidates, Kenneth Jeyaretnam of the Reform Party (RP) and Desmond Lim (Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), failed to secure the minimum 12.5%, hence losing their $14,500 election deposits.

Are we moving slowly towards a 2-party system? Perhaps but not that soon. To-date, the Workers' Party is now sitting on 8 parliamentary seats out of the total 88 seats. The remaining 80 seats are by the PAP's.

The breakdown voting result is as such:

Lee Li Lian (WP) 16,038 votes (54.52%)
Koh Poh Koon (PAP) 12,856 votes (43.71%)
Kenneth Jeyaretnam (RP) 353 votes (1.20%)
Desmond Lim (SDA) 168 votes (0.57%)

Total valid votes 29,415
Total rejected votes 417
Total votes 29,832

An irrelevant comment - Why is the total rejected votes more than the votes for RP and SDA? Oops.

The by election result was announced by the Returning Officer, Yam Ah Mee, at around 11pm last night. Watch Yam Ah Mee possibly last appearance as a Returning Officer below.

NOTE: Above result does not include the overseas votes.

Redesigning Google: how Larry Page engineered a beautiful revolution

When Page took office, his first directive was clear. "Larry said ‘hey everyone, we’re going to redesign all of our products,’" recalls Jon Wiley, lead designer on Google Search. Wiley and co had just two months to give Google a fresh coat of paint, and to start thinking holistically about how Google as a whole was perceived. "We had a mandate to make this all look good," Wiley says.

Learning from Competition

Steven Sinofsky, former President of the Windows Division at Microsoft, made a reply to some of the reactions when people discovered that he was using an iPhone and not a product from Microsoft.

Learning from the competition is not just required of all product development folks, but can also be somewhat of a skill worth honing.

Steven explained the importance of learning from competitors, the common mistakes and potential challenges faced and some recommended approaches when learning from competitors. He then went on concluding as such:

Be obsessed with the competition. Always.

I agree with him absolutely that it is absolutely essential to know your competitors especially when you are building products.

Yet another classic Tan Kin Lian going around labeling people ignorant

A screen capture of a Facebook Post by Tan Kin Lian.

Screen Capture on 13 Jan 2012, 10:30pm

Screen Capture on same post on 14 Jan, 9:25am
Do note, some comments from my screenshot above are deleted by TKL already. My point is Zan Thang's comment rude? Does he or anyone have the right to make and disagree with any other's view? And if one disagree, is that considered rude?

Or perhaps young people needs to be a Yes man and must go around agreeing with an elder man? In another Facebook post, Tan Kin Lian offered his advice for young people - be humble, show respect for other people, look for what to agree, rather than to disagree, be helpful. One follower of his, Kenneth, made a harmless comment but is soon labeled given a lecture for being ignorant. BTW, he is lucky not to be labeled as "sick" by TKL.

Thereafter in the same post, other readers started coming in to defend Kenneth.

I wonder who is the one not having an open mind.

"I Dreamed a Dream" Lyrics - by Les Miserables Cast

[Fantine is left alone, unemployed and destitute]

[FANTINE]
There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

"Do You Hear The People Sing" Lyrics - by Les Miserables Cast

ENJOLRAS
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

COMBEFERRE
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Courfeyrac:
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!

ALL
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

FEUILLY
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

ALL
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
