President Kennedy proposed to the United States that they pursue the dream of putting a person on the moon by the end of the 1960s. He said, "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy but because they are hard. Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills." The nation rallied around that mission, and they made it their own.
