Group Internet Explorer Tabs Into One Icon In Taskbar

One annoying default "feature" of Internet Explorer is it displays each tab as separate taskbar icon. This is unlike other browsers like Chrome and Firefox. To get around this, try the following steps:
  1. Tools → Internet Options
  2. Under the General tab, click on Tabs button.
  3. Make sure 'Show previews for individual tabs in the taskbar' option is unchecked.
  4. Click OK to apply changes.
  5. Re-launch Internet Explorer.
IE tabs should now be grouped into one single icon in the taskbar.

Yahoo will not recognize "Do Not Track" (DNT) from IE 10

In a Yahoo policy blog, Yahoo indicated they will not support the "Do Not Track" (DNT) setting from IE 10 because the DNT feature will come enabled by default. Yahoo believes the opt out should be by user intent and not by the browser creator. This reaction was echoed by Apache's founders.

Just an update on the major browsers - The new released Microsoft IE 10 will have the DNT feature enabled by default. Google is in the process of implementing the DNT feature in their Chrome but had been offering something similar in the form of a Chrome plug-in called Keep My Opt-Outs. Mozilla Firefox has got the DNT feature but will need to be enabled manually.

Chrome most secured, IE second, Firefox third

According to a study conducted by Accuvant, Google Chrome ranks top for security, followed by Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Accuvant's conclusion:

The URL blacklisting services offered by all three browsers will stop fewer attacks than will go undetected. Both Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer implement state-of-the-art antiexploitation technologies, but Mozilla Firefox lags behind without JIT hardening. While both Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer implement the same set of anti-exploitation technologies, Google Chrome’s plug-in security and sandboxing architectures are implemented in a more thorough and comprehensive manner. Therefore, we believe Google Chrome is the browser that is most secured against attack.

To note, the study – while independently and objectively assessed, said Accuvant – was funded by Google.

Fake SSL certificate DigiNotar impersonate Gmail and other Google services

Google Inc reported a fradulent SSL certificate issued by DigiNotar Certificate Authority (CA) that is "valid for *.google.com. A possible man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks against Google users, whereby someone tried to get between them and encrypted Google services, can be launched. The people affected were primarily located in Iran. According to a post published on Sunday by a user calling himself alibo, the counterfeit certificate surfaced when he tried to log into his Gmail account using the Google Chrome browser.

Google Chrome users were protected from this attack because Chrome was able to detect the fraudulent certificate. To further protect the safety and privacy of our users, Google will disable the DigiNotar certificate authority in Chrome while investigations continue. Mozilla and Microsoft also moved quickly to protect its users soon after. This means that Chrome and Firefox users will receive alerts if they try to visit websites that use DigiNotar certificates.

How to play WebM videos on Internet Explorer IE 9?

Microsoft has decided to only support H.264 videos in its latest release of Internet Explorer IE 9 by default, so you can't watch WebM videos without installing additional software.

To solve this problem, Google developed a WebM plugin for IE9. "They said elephants couldn't ride flying dolphins. They said that one of the world's most popular browsers couldn't play WebM video in HTML5. They were wrong," mentions Google half-jokingly.

Mobile Browser Comparison: Windows Phone 7 vs. iPhone 4.0 vs. Android 2.2

PocketNow uploaded a video to demonstrate the comparison among Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 running its mobile version of Internet Explorer against Google's Android 2.2 and iPhone 4.0. The smartphone site reiterated that Windows Phone 7 software is still a work in progress and what was shown was not representative until the OS is completed.

From the 10 minutes demonstration, the browser of Windows Phone 7 seems to be on the right track, proving worthy browsing experience. One rather unique feature of Windows Phone 7 mobile browser is its tab management. Tab management is super quick and it allows opening of multiple tabs with websites loading in the background simultaneously. Websites' load times are competitive with other top smartphone browsers.

The video demonstration also showed some of the shortcomings of both iPhone 4.0 and Android 2.2.

Quick preview on Internet Explorer 9

Microsoft has announced their plans for their new Internet Explorer 9.0. This new browser is still in its infant stage and the interface is still pretty barebones e.g. there is no proper address bar but just a simple "go to" popup window. This is a developers' test tool, really. If you eager to test it out, you may find it here.

Some of the new promises of IE9 are native H.264 streaming support through HTML5, SVG rendering, faster JavaScript engine, and many more.

Do NOT hit the F1 key if a website tells you to

The Microsoft Security Advisory has issued a vulnerability in VBScript that is exposed on supported versions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 through the use of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

So, should a Web site displays a specially crafted dialog box asking user to hit the F1 key for Help, a malicious arbitrary code could be executed in the security context of the currently logged-on user, resulting in a security breach.

In summary, DO NOT HIT THE F1 KEY IF A WEBSITE TELLS YOU TO. Microsoft is still investigating in this vulnerability.
